Funding Opportunities: Your Students Can Help!

Over the last several weeks I have received both requests, and recommendations for places where teachers can go to apply for various monetary supports. This week’s WHIRL post includes free databases that maintain updated and quality funding opportunities for K-12 teachers. In addition, I am asking that anyone with information on mini-grants, classroom supplies, project funding and so on, to please post those in the comments section of this post!

Under the Collaboration Center of our TRC site, we have a section called Funding Opportunities. Anytime we hear of an active funding opportunity that we think our teachers could qualify for we post it here! My recommendation with this list is to scroll through and identify the grants and awards that your classroom might qualify for based on content area, demographics and so on. There are quite a few options so you may not qualify for all, but you will qualify for a few!

I would recommend that you engage your students in the hunt for funding sources. Allow your students to hone their persuasive writing techniques and their project creation skills by proposing an application to a possible donor. This is an opportunity to help students understand the 21st Century Skill of innovation and the 21st Century reality of entitlement. Students need to understand that support is available to them but they have to earn it through creativity.

Donors Choose http://www.donorschoose.org/teachers is a powerful nonprofit organization that accepts requests year round from any classroom teacher in the United States for project and classroom supplies. This nonprofit then allows donors to choose the project that they want to fund and the turn around for funding is very fast and easy.

Adopt-A-Classroom Program http://www.adoptaclassroom.org Classroom teachers can register at this Web site to be adopted by an individual, business, or foundation. The donor simply chooses a classroom from the Web site, donates up to $500, and the teacher then has a credit online to use to shop at a number of vendors who have partnered with Adopt-A-Classroom. The teacher has full discretion in purchasing materials for the classroom and Adopt-A-Classroom can even work one-on-one with the teacher if the vendors provided cannot meet classroom needs.

Grant Wrangler http://www.grantwrangler.com is a nonprofit run by Karen Greenwood Henke. Karen and her staff post the latest funding streams from corporations, governments and non-profits. This is a great site to check in with for funding opportunities!
