Math Matters!

Math Matters White City Elementary TRC students in Grades 3-6 worked collaboratively to seek answers to the age-old question, “When am I ever going to use this math stuff again?”  A team of four 6th graders developed a set of interview questions and drafted a letter used to invite adults to participate in their project.  Students in Grades 3 & 5 and Grades 4 & 6 partnered up to form teams of four and set out with Flip video and camera in hand to interview adults.  The mission was to…See More

Reading Curriculum

Our K-5 teachers are hoping (that budget thing seems to get in the way!) to be able to purchase new reading curriculum materials next year.  4th and 5th grades have used novel studies for the past few years and it's been forever since the K-3 folks got new materials.  We are interested in knowing what series or materials you use in your schools and if you would purchase that series again.  Thank you for sharing with us. Mary See More

From An Ant's Perspective

Those of you in Phase 7 may remember Kari's cross-curricular project based on the story, Two Bad Ants. Kari added a couple new activities this year. She used her flip video to tape her students describing something in her classroom from an ant's perspective. You will see some very clever 3rd grade "ants." She also used a voice thread and let the students chronicle the progress of their ant farm.Link to Flip Video…See More

Thanks for the Math Snacks link, Melanie. At the National Charter School Conference a year ago, we saw a program called Skillastics which integrates physical activity with academics. Our School Health Council purchased several components of the…

Quilting a Bridge from Tradition to Technology

Nancy Laudemann, White City 4th Grade teacher, used The Quiltmaker's Gift by Jeff Brumbeau to develop cross-curricular activities centered around quilting. Students have the opportunity to see how technology has moved quilting to a new level -- from hand stitching to high-tech quilting using a computerized sewing machine.  Students also explore quilt design, history, and the special meanings that quilts can have.  Reading, math, writing, and social studies activities comprise the components of…See More

IXL Math

We have found what we think is a fabulous website for math. It is standards based -- you click on a US Map to get to the KS Standards. There are activities for each indicator by grade level. If a student answers incorrectly, there is an explanation that identifies the correct answer and why it is correct. The teachers have loved this part because it is a brief explanation with an illustration and the kids have an "ah ha" moment when they read the explanation. The teachers receive an e-mail…See More

Triple A Math

This site may already be familiar to most of you, but in case it's not ... The site was shared with our TRC team by one of our JH charter math school teachers. They like the site especially because students can focus on one isolated skill. There is a tutorial, a practice lesson, and then a game assessment. The students score is posted as soon as they complete a practice or assessment, so teachers can record scores as students complete the activity. There are also language arts and social…See More

Daily Schedule: I try to be in classrooms at least 30-45 minutes on a daily basis during the following time slots. It does vary as teachers will sometimes ask for me to come during a different time for a special project and the other half of my job will frequently demand a change in schedule.

6th Grade -- 8:20 - 9:15 a.m.
5th Grade -- 9:15 - 9:50 a.m.

4th Grade -- 12:00 - 12:50 p.m
3rd Grade -- 2:30 - 3:15 p.m.

In addition, planning with teachers on Mondays during one of their regular plan times.
