Can you believe this is our last week of reading? Please finish chapter 8 & 9 and share reflections that address at least one of the following questions:
1) What is the student/laptop ratio in your work environment and how do you maximize the use of the technology resources?
2) Share some strategies to encourage safe and equitable access to technology resources. For example, share a lesson plan idea that addresses fair use, privacy, or Internet protection.
3) How do you work with the community of learners to promote a safe online environment, including local establishments (e.g. libraries) and parents?
Participants seeking college credit must write a reflection paper (approximately 2 pages) that discusses the application of skills and knowledge gained from the book in a real world project. This project may include working with one or more TRC teachers. We will discuss the final project in more detail at the facilitator training on Wednesday.
Having a TRC classroom this year has changed the ratio in my classroom. Most of the teachers in my building have 5 computers in their room. We also have a 22 computer lab but the computers are old. Having the two TRC rooms in our building has made life easier for everyone. In addition, all of our classroom teachers have a projector and mimio. The two TRC classrooms have SMART boards. This is for 3rd and 4th grade. Our 5th and 6th grade have 4 laptop carts with 20 laptops in them for 8 classrooms. This makes it about a 2-1 setting. I find it easy to manage the 2-1 in my room since we use a lot of center work, however, there are times when it would be convenient to have 1-2-1 but I'm thrilled with the access I do have. In addition I also have 2-1 iTouches so this helps to close a few of the gaps with the computers.

Our TRC grant was for a 2:1 laptop initiative. We also have 2:1 itouch pods as well. During the day we use the laptops during center work and so the students have more of an opportunity for individual time on the laptop. Science class allows for the students to work in pairs or on a couple of projects they have worked in teams of 4 with one data recorder while the others are observing. When all students need to work on their own, we share the time. For example two groups are reading and two groups are working on the laptops. I enjoy having 2:1 laptops with the touches to supplement. The kids are great about sharing with each other. I think if I had my choice, I would rather have individual touches for each child rather than laptops. I sat in on a session at Mace where the third graders have 1:1 ipod touches. I see how nice it can be for each student to personalize their technology. With personalization, comes greater responsibility and care for the technology.
The other classrooms in my building have 5 laptops per classroom with access to a very "old" computer lab that runs very slow. All teachers use mimeos for SMART lessons and all have projectors. Most teachers use their 5 laptops as center work. No other classrooms are using handhelds. The students' ownership for the technology and taking care of it is limited with fewer laptops per classroom.
