Lesson: Commercials (Persuasive Speechs)
Grade: 4th
School: Deerfield Elementary
Students start out this project by chosing an everyday object they couldn't live without, the best thing they've ever purchased, or something they are very interested in or collect. Then we watch a variety of commercials, mostly those aimed at kids, and discuss what the company is trying to do. After doing some internet-guided research they are set out to write a persuasive speech or commercial. The written copy of the commercial is edited by their peers. After they are satisified they bring their item to school and we record their commercial. For most we use the classroom during recess or if needed go outside or to the gym.
After the commercials are edited and put together (they worked with the facilitator on this), we watch the commercials as a class. We compare them to the professional commercial we started with and discus their effectiveness. We also talk about changes they would make and why.
