Full scholarships for teachers to attend the K-12 Computing Teachers Workshop
Oct 2-3, Tucson, AZ

Computing education at the K-12 level is one of the most critical issues facing our country, even while our public schools are experiencing unprecedented resource constraints. Computer science and information technology teachers, at the frontlines of preparing tomorrow’s workforce for global competitiveness, need solutions to effectively address these challenges.

The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology (ABI), in collaboration with the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) and the University of Arizona, is hosting a Workshop for K-12 Computing Teachers focused on solutions for teaching computer science and information technology. The workshop will be held on October 2-3, 2009 in conjunction with the 2009 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, in Tucson, AZ.

The event will begin Friday afternoon with a Town Hall meeting, followed by a Saturday workshop from 8:00 am – 2:30 pm. These events are designed to create a timely community-wide dialogue on the state and the realities of K-12 computing teachers in diverse communities; engage teachers in the creation and discussion of solutions that are applicable in their classroom and relevant to the challenges they face; and disseminate the information gathered from these events to a broad national audience.

The workshop will include:
- The state and future of the AP Computer Science curriculum
- Teaching computational thinking with simulations and modeling
- Teaching computer science concepts with toys
- Building student interest in computing courses
- Culturally relevant computing
- Networking with peers and with colleagues from industry and academia at the Grace Hopper Celebration

Participation in this workshop will count as six professional development contract hours (a certificate will be delivered upon attendance).

Full scholarship for attendance is included in the invitation (travel, hotel, and meals) however participation will be limited to 100 teachers. Please complete the application form at http://www.gracehopper.org/2009/forms/csta/ by September 15!

Successful applicants will be notified by email by September 21st but space is limited so apply early!

This workshop is funded by the National Science Foundation, the Motorola Foundation and IBM.

Please do not hesitate to contact Kim McLeod, Program Manager at the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology if you have any questions or concerns, at kimm@anitaborg.org.
